Hi from almost India! We arrive in India tomorrow morning so I wanted to do a quick update from Mauritius and my time on the boat since South Africa. Classes are going alright aside from grades haha. I am not doing too poorly but it is really hard to stay on top of schoolwork while processing each country. I guess I’m just not used to getting grades below a certain point. OH WELL! It’s about the experience right? Moving on, we were in Mauritius for one day. Unfortunately, I woke up on that day and had a BLOWN UP LIP!!! I still have yet to figure out who came in my room during the night and punched me square on the lip… It’s one of those mysteries that will never be solved. I took some Benadryl that morning in the hopes that the swelling would subside while I was walking around in port. I got to the center of town and started to look at local artists work when I realized that I was feeling drowsy and nauseated. Not only did the heat of Mauritius not help the situation but it made it much worse. I bought a wall hanging that I am VERY excited about and kept walking around like nothing was wrong. Until, at lunch I started to get hot and uncomfortable to the point where I knew I needed to go back to the ship. As much as I was pissed that I didn’t get to spend more time in Mauritius I was glad that I made the decision to come back to the ship. I didn’t want to be the girl that fainted in Mauritius for being overheated on Benadryl. When on ship time came around everyone was getting back on the boat, obviously. Most people had spent the day on catamaran rides getting beyond intoxicated. As I started feeling better, I left my room and observed those people around the ship… falling up and down stairs, walking around in sunglasses so no on could see there eyes, dancing, laughing, and just plain out of control. It was all fun and games to people, until we got the news that we had left Mauritius without a fellow voyager.
This guy had gone on a semester at sea trip and was not only dehydrated but also decided to chug a bottle of alcohol in a very short amount of time. He was rushed back to the boat and immediately to the Mauritian hospital after that. The boat doctors made an announcement to everyone on the ship that he came extremely close to death. They said, “as close as you can from drinking.” He was in an alcohol coma...not responding and not breathing for a while. They finally revived him and he reappeared back on the boat the day we got to India. I’m still not entirely sure why they let him back on the ship, but I am sure he now has restrictions. In addition to this guy, on the way to India we also had to stop at a United States military base to airlift 3 people off the boat because of sicknesses. There were 2 students and 1 crew member that got off the ship that day and as cool as it was to watch the military boats circling our ship and watching the process unfold, it was a very tense day. That night dean Dan (my extended family dad) made a speech about choices. It was emotional and breathtaking the way he spoke about Mauritius and what everyone decided to do while they were there. I found myself at one point of his speech on the verge of tears. People’s choices really do affect everyone around them, and it is sad to see someone not respect himself or herself enough to know their limit. Needless to say the week that we spent on the ship on our way to India was quite interesting.
The only other thing that happened on the ship during that week was we had a family dinner in Dean Dan and Barbara’s suite. It was a really fun time and we ordered pizzas and soda. They are the most supportive and loving people on this ship, and dean Dan really is a special person. He is so inspirational and really makes you open your eyes to what the world truly has to offer us. I am so glad that he was chosen to be my extended dad; I could not have gotten anyone better. Ok so we are now in India and it is our last day… I have been busy this entire time and I will do my best to get the whole India blog up shortly.
Love you and miss you all
